[Background] wiki

[Personality] Merle Dixon is a flawed man. By most standards, he's also a very, very bad man. He's got a list of sins under his belt that's probably a mile long and he's not very apt to apologize for a single one of them. It's both a mix of pride and stubborness that might prevent this a lot of the time and then a stubborn belief that he does what he does to get by in a world that's never been kind to him.

Merle isn't without a conscience though, as it shows later on in the show. He has remorse for some of what he's done and he's not entirely the monster that he's painted to be as. Now that doesn't mean underneath the racism, the bigotry, and the volatile temper, that it's secretly all sunshine and fluff.

Merle Dixon is a redneck down to the T. He's rowdy, he's got opinions that he's not afraid to let be known about everything under the sun and it doesn't matter how wrong they might be. He's also an addict to boot and a former drug dealer. He's got plenty of vices and not a whole lot of pleasant qualities.

As a matter of fact, not many people can stand Merle's company for lengthy periods of time except maybe his baby brother, Daryl. Merle doesn't seem to mind that though. Going it alone is the name of the game and while he's got people he's friendly with at Woodbury, it also doesn't mean a damn to him if he's got to take them out.

Merle seems to fit right in life after the apocalypse really.

He'll also look out for his little brother though. Daryl is important enough to him that he didn't even bat an eyelash to get on The Governor's bad side to be with him and while he gave his share of complaining, he even followed his baby brother back to a group that hated him for all the wrongs he'd done just to be at his side.

He'll proudly say he raised his brother, but the truth is? He was as neglectful as their father when it came right down to it. He spent a lot of time in and out of juvie and even ran off to join the military when he was able, leaving his brother with an abusive father.

He's not a perfect brother by any means, but it's clear he loves Daryl. He shows it in the best ways he knows how, even if they don't measure up. He tends to practice toughlove with him more than anything else, insulting and pushing Daryl to rise up and prove himself. He taught him what he knew, showed him how to hunt and track and how to make it in a world that's never been kind to either of them.

It's probably the only way he knew how to do it, really.

Neither Dixon brother was given much of a foundation to learn otherwise. Both parents were neglectful alcoholics and they lost their mother due to a fire when they were young. Their dad was absuive to a high degree and Merle felt the need to run away from the old man before he ended up killing him. He says he doesn't know Daryl suffered the same abuse and seems genuinely shocked when faced with the scars he'd suffered while Merle was gone though.

It was probably because of this life that Merle sought to act out against society and to develop a dependence on drugs. Meth was his drug of choice, but anything will do in a pinch. He's pretty fond of alcohol too.

Despite all these flaws of his, Merle isn't exactly a coward. He has faced some impossible odds, including taking his own hand and sawing it off when he was faced with being left on a roof to die of either dehydration or walkers, and even making a decision to face down The Governor alone to help his group at the prison stand a fighting chance.

And he never once begged for his life during any of this. This is important to Merle. He'll go down fighting and never once beg for anything. Whatever he gets, it's because he damn well fought for it on his own.

Despite his many flaws and what can make him sound like an ignorant, hateful bastard, there's more under the surface. Merle's shown to have intelligence when he bothers to use that brain of his instead of just running his mouth. He has impressive skills with weaponry and tactical plans thanks to military training. He's also an expert tracker and hunter just like his brother.

Not only that, but he likes to read. He mentions that the Woodbury library will be the only thing he misses about the place. He spent plenty of time there, reading whatever caught his attention.

This includes the bible. He's read it to the point that he can quote verses easily. He might be a believer in God and an afterlife, but that doesn't mean he really seeks out repentance for his various sins. Maybe because he knows that for some things, he can never really make it up or be truly forgiven.

Whatever happens after he's dead, Merle will probably take whatever waits for him honest. Head-on like he does everything in his life.

[Abilities]
Merle is good with firearms, hand-to-hand fights, and tactical planning. He's an expert in hunting and tracking, but over all, he's just a normal guy.

[Other important stuff]
Merle is missing his right hand. It has been replaced with a makeshift prosthetic that he fits with a knife for self defense.

[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] It just sounds like an interesting premise and it's cool to see a pretty large TWD cast to boot.
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] The AC is pretty nice.
[Where did you hear about Somarium?] Through a friend.
[Any questions?] None that I can think of.
